military campaign against the Texas rebellion ended in complete failure. Santa Anna as a prisoner took a shameful and humiliating attitude, not to be shot, agreed to recognize the independence of Texas and signed orders for the Mexican army withdrew from the Texan territory. In May 1836, at the port of Velasco, signed a treaty to formalize the agreement with the rebels and promised to negotiate with the United States the admission of Texas to this country. After this incident, Santa Anna returned to Mexico after his release he resigned the presidency and fled to Cuba.
In late 1836, Spain recognized the independence of Mexico and the governments of both countries signed treaties of friendship and trade.
